Internet Money | Internet Cafe Crackdown Renews Legal Debate

But when a Central Florida sheriff recently captured headlines after shutting one down and declaring all of them clearly illegal, it reignited a debate about these so-called "strip-mall casinos."

About 1,000 of these businesses have popped up in Florida in recent years, saying they are allowed under a sweepstakes provision of state law.

Opponents say these operations are simply illegal gambling houses that attract crime and other problems and have nothing to do with sweepstakes.

The confusion has resulted in a patchwork of enforcement across the state, with some jurisdictions fighting an uphill battle to block these businesses, while others have given up the fight as they wait for lawmakers to clarify the issue.

"It's abundantly clear that what they are doing is gambling," said Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd , who shut down The Horseshoe Internet cafe south of Clermont on Aug. 15 and arrested two people: an Orlando man and a Deltona woman. "I don't know why it is some jurisdictions are more aggressive than others."

Loophole or not?

Judd joins a short list of officials willing to crack down on the cafes.

Assistant State Attorney Mark Simpson of the 5th Judicial Circuit already tried that in his district, which includes Lake, Marion, Sumter, Citrus and Hernando counties. Last year, he took two Ocala-area cafe owners to trial and lost both times.

"They have driven a Mack truck through a needle-sized loophole," said Simpson, who no longer encourages authorities in his district to challenge such businesses.

The industry's bottomless coffers, formidable defense attorneys and a technicality in state law are huge roadblocks for prosecutors with restricted resources, Simpson said.

"They make money hand over fist and have tons and tons of it they use to fight legal cases," Simpson said. "If the Legislature wants gambling on every street corner, then, by God, they are doing a good job by doing nothing."

Supporters say the businesses are sanctioned by Florida's sweepstakes law, which allows the businesses to operate like game promotions at popular fast-food restaurants. When a customer buys a product - Internet time, for example - they are given entries into the sweepstakes.

"The law is clearly stated. Sweepstakes are legal in the state of Florida. Those that disagree with the law call it a loophole," said Jacksonville attorney Kelly B. Mathis, who represents Allied Veterans of the World, a group that operates 39 cafes in the state.

No Florida judge has ruled that the computerized games are slot machines - which are illegal in Florida unless they are regulated by the state under specific circumstances.

One local lawmaker wants all-out ban

Some lawmakers have even got into the business.

State Rep. Peter Nehr, R-Tarpon Springs, opened an Internet cafe last year in Palm Harbor. State Sen. Mike Bennett , R-Bradenton, is part-owner of a sports club that houses one.

Wednesday's daily deal was the first time a Google Offers product has been promoted on its minimalist website, and may signal an escalation of competition with Groupon - which has filed for an IPO sources say could happen as soon as next month.

The pair are vying for advertising dollars from local businesses, such as restaurants and retail stores.

A short blurb beneath Google's sparse home page - a valued window into a plethora of services from email to maps - offered visitors $25 tickets to New York's American Museum of Natural History for the discounted price of $5.

"We occasionally include a link on the Google homepage that points users to important information, whether it be about a relevant cause, a new product or an offer," a Google spokeswoman said in a statement emailed to Reuters.

"Users can benefit from learning about great deals from local organizations."

Google has traditionally resisted using its homepage for promotions, save for occasionally pushing in-house products such as its Chrome Web browser or its now-defunct Nexus S phone.

Google generated 96 percent of its roughly $29 billion in revenue last year from advertising. Most of it comes from ads that appear alongside Google's search results.

How To Get Traffic | Allentown To Get 250 High-tech Trash Cans

When you think of things that are high-tech and solar-powered, trash cans don't normally jump to mind.

That might change this year when Allentown installs 250 solar-powered trash-compacting garbage cans in high traffic areas and city parks in a bid to get a handle on litter and improve the city's trash collecting efficiency.

The cans will be paid for, installed and maintained by Waste Management , the city's trash collection contractor, and emptied by city solid waste crews.

"We are here to make Allentown a cleaner and greener city," Mayor Ed Pawlowski said Wednesday as the cans were displayed at 12th and Hamilton streets.

The boxy, chest-high receptacles are powered by solar cells and 100 of them will be coupled with a recycling kiosk that will allow passers-by to toss in bottles, cans and paper. They include sensors that use mobile technology to contact the city when they need to be emptied.

Pawlowski said a unit was tested recently at the corner of Sixth and Turner streets and made a significant dent in the litter problem.

"I was shocked," he said. "That corner in those three months was the cleanest I have ever seen it."

City Recycling and Solid Waste Bureau manager Ann Saurman said the cans are far better than the small, blue, pole-mounted litter baskets the city now relies on. The baskets fill up too quickly and can actually contribute to the litter problem as residents overstuff them and they spill onto the street.

Waste Management will chip in $5,000 to help the city educate residents on how to use the new cans. It's one of the largest deployments of the technology in Pennsylvania , behind Philadelphia , which has about 1,000 of the compactors.

Bill Eddy, sales director with Newton, Mass.-based BigBelly Solar, said the cans will cut collection frequency by as much as 70 percent and could save 3,300 work hours and up to 10,000 gallons of fuel.

The Mountain View, Calif.-based company's chairman and former CEO Eric Schmidt said Google+ is requiring people use their real names when making profiles for its new social network because it considers Google+ a platform for future projects.

Privacy advocates have criticized Google for requiring people use their real names on the new social network, but Schmidt said Google won't change the policies to accommodate those who don't want to use their real names.

He said people who want to remain anonymous should not use Google+.

Google executives in recent months said having real names on the site allows the company to maintain a tone of behavior preferable to anonymous forums.

Facebook also officially requires people to use their real names, but does not enforce that rule. Meanwhile, Google has been adamant about the real-name rule, and has removed profiles from Google+ if it believes the names are fabricated.

The real-name issue likely has an impact on Google's advertising strategies. When a social networking site user adds his or her age, gender, location and other details to their accounts, advertisers can easily use those details to target people.

    How To Get Traffic | East Cleveland Voters Get A Chance To Kill Hated Traffic Cameras

    For drivers, bring up the word 'traffic enforcement cameras' and one issure to get a lot of sometimes very heated opinions. Safety promoting tool or cash cow for cash-strapped cities? That's the question most commonly addressed with the robo cops that seek to catch red light runners and/or speeders. Well, in East Cleveland, the people, angry citizens got enough signatures to put the issue of removing the traffic cams on the ballot this November.

    For East Cleveland's government, this referendum on the cameras proposes a sticky issue.

    On one hand, the government has to respect the rights of the people. After all, this is America and America is a democracy. So, in keeping with our democratic tradition, governments have a duty to ensure that voters, when they do go to the polls, have all the materials at hand in order to make the best, educated decision possible.

    On the other hand, even East Cleveland councilman Nathanial Martin admits that removing the cameras will have major financial implications for an already cash-strapped city. Speaking to Fox 8 News, Martin said that the city owes over $1 million on the cameras to the company that installed them a few years ago.

    In addition to owing the camera installation company cash, East Cleveland mayor Gary Norton said that the cameras' removal could adversely impact the safety services provided by the city, though specific implications of how this would happen (outside of less traffic enforcement) were not given.

    For the people, though, this is not a question about revenue or city services, but one of government intruding into the lives of ordinary people when it should not be doing so, a case of Big Brother sticking his nose where it is not needed, or wanted. Another complaint: the cameras criminalize ordinary people for victimless crimes that do not hurt anything. After all, even if some one speeds or blows through a light just after t turns red without causing an accident, is it really such a big deal? In addition, money used to pay fines could also go into the local economy, not city coffers.

    In the end, come the day after elections, the public's true opinion of the cams will be known.

    SEO | Big Brand SEO - Campaigns, Integration And Extended Brand Keywords

    Throughout my six years as an SEO, there have been times when I've questioned the value of SEO for clients. The reasoning behind this was that popular non-brand phrases were unlikely to drive business or in some cases where markets were dominated by aggregator sites, where people require choice from the offering, rather than an individual brand. Data was often backed up by generic paid search generating negative return and eventually being switched off.

    There are always long tail phrases that will generate return but ultimately, that is not what this post is about. Brand terms are vital and in the majority of cases drive more revenue than high volume generic phrases, especially for big brands yet are often ignored on the basis that a site should rank for them. There are also opportunities that are not strictly related to the brand itself that are often ignored.

    Working at OMD has exposed me to working with some of the biggest brands out there and my role is getting stuck in to the chunky pieces of work. Working with existing media clients, it would not make sense to not offer the service and it wouldn't wash to argue the toss for not doing SEO. For the same reason, integration with other digital and above the line channels is crucial too. Offline marketing types don't tend to understand digital and to be fair, there is likely a mutual misunderstanding but the two channels need to work together for the greater good and co-ordination is required between teams.

    Campaign Based SEO Integration

    One common failing of above the line work is that there is no measurability. There are ways in which to rectify this by the use of vanity URLs/domains and redirecting with campaign tracking codes but not everyone will remember the brand, let alone the URL. As much as TV advertisers will hate to admit it, people will often remember the advert but not the brand, unless the brand is drilled in to your head to the point of infuriation like the Go Compare and We Buy Any Car adverts here in the UK. If the branding is not strong however, there are other ways to get visitors to the site via other marketing channels and ensure the brand message is passed. Taking the first example to come to mind:

    I remember watching this video and not being entirely sure what it was for immediately afterwards, so this is a perfect example of what I am talking about. In actual fact, the video is promoting Cadbury's Dairy Milk; however, even four years after the advert, there are related terms that are not brand related:

    I've deliberately excluded unrelated and brand terms, which add to the number of searches and while the volumes aren't ground breaking, the advert is four years old and is still receiving search volume. Searches for these phrases further extend the measurement of above the line activity and increase traffic and ensure the brand association is made online, if it was not clear to begin with. In this particular example, the brand (Cadbury's) appears eighth in the search results for the phrase, though visibility is poor due to the dominance of universal search:

    None of the videos or images are from an official YouTube channel and the brand association is not clear on the titles which is certainly not ideal. Other, non-TV advertising can quite happily live on the site in harmony with regular content, particularly if it is humorous or emotive in some way. This could be in the form of advertising from newspapers, magazines, pub toilets or public transport. The same rules apply.

    My strategy for integrating campaigns in to search and to gain maximum exposure and offline tracking would look something like the following:

    1. Ensure the client keeps you in the loop with any upcoming marketing activity

    It is difficult to carry out campaign optimisation strategy without being forewarned. This is often the most difficult part so prepare to be reactive.

    2. If at all possible get a sneak peak of the campaign from the client or at the very least a brief

    Again, a nice luxury if you can make it happen but seeing the campaign first hand will give a better understanding of what the campaign it is and allow you to properly brainstorm potential related keyword searches.

    3. Create official YouTube and Flickr accounts if they do not already exist

    Fairly obvious point, however you’d be surprised by the amount of brands that don’t have a branded YouTube account.

    4. Prepare a paid search campaign covering brand and advert related terms, as well as any generic phrases that may apply, i.e. "drumming gorilla"

    We all know that ensuring number one positions for every potential keyword is difficult so for maximum exposure and tie in to above the line, PPC will help assist and ensure maximum coverage.

    5. Ensure there is a section of the site for adverts and campaigns and use a tailored landing page for paid search, as well as SEO

    Again, an obvious point but not all brands have spaces on their site for their advertising campaigns.

    6. Brief other digital teams to include relevant imagery for display and affiliate activity to amplify the campaign digitally

    Display creatives should be altered on a regular basis and while I'm no expert on display, it would make sense for them to match any television advertising. The same creatives could be passed on to affiliate networks for affiliates to use on their own site, which should amplify the impact and engrave the advert on peoples’ minds.

    7. Prepare and optimise a landing page for the campaign in question, include imagery and a description of the campaign for the visually impaired

    Not the same as point five, which suggests having a dedicated section of the site for advertising, my point here is to ensure a dedicated landing page for each advert and not all adverts on a single page.

    8. Launch the campaign

    By launch, this could be the first TV airing, date of coverage in newspaper, etc. The following post launch strategy should occur as soon as possible afterwards and should be fairly self explanatory:

    The last point is important; often brands will remove older adverts from their sites and YouTube channels, which is completely unnecessary. If the campaign is successful and memorable it can drive traffic for years to come. One further point I'd highlight is tracking content on third party sites using the Google Analytics URL builder where possible.

    Search can be avoided altogether with the use of QR codes, however I'd argue that until QR code readers are native in modern smartphones, rather than requiring a third party app, the uptake is likely to be small and regardless, there will always be searches, so it is still worth covering all bases.

    Extended Brand Terms

    Campaigns are not the only brand related searches that get overlooked. There are many extended brand terms where a brand will not rank in first position. Often brands have parent or sister companies that will outrank them, even if they are less relevant and traffic is lost to these sites. This can be avoided by linking between the sites or if required, by link building targeting these terms.

    In my experience there is one common brand related suffix that is usually outranked by third party sites and they relate to the brand and vouchers/discounts. Those pesky voucher code affiliates dominate these terms though this is often due to not having a relevant landing page on the site. If there is no brand presence, people will visit the affiliate sites for these terms anyway, so why not have a discount and voucher code landing page on the site? The offer doesn't have to be earth shattering, as long as it gets the traffic to the site and not your affiliates. This can be supported through paid search.

    Other common brand variations include complaints, contact, prices etc. Make use of your Analytics data, internal search and Google suggest for common variations and see where you rank. I'd imagine you'd be surprised at what ranks for these terms. If you don't rank, it's likely that there is no relevant landing page.

    Brand Products

    Products are effectively brand terms. To use the example above, the main brand was Cadbury's; however the product was Dairy Milk, which is a brand in itself. Often the product can have greater search volume than the main brand. Again, ensuring a dedicated page for each brand assists with this, though in many cases, the product will have its own site. Of course, there are further terms relating to the product, Dairy Milk itself is a chocolate bar, a milk chocolate bar at that.

    Vanity Searches

    This leads nicely on to vanity searches, something which the largest brands seem to be adamant on ranking for, despite a likely poor ROI. The brand association is enough for them to want to rank. In the continued example, Cadbury's and Nestle may want to fight it out for "chocolate". Levis and G-Star may want to fight it out for "jeans". It would be poor show to not advise the client that ranking for these terms will take a lot of resource, time and effort for little return but for them, it is often necessary and as long as they have a reasonable budget, there is no reason not to chase it.

    Related Terms

    There are always less obvious related terms that can be taken advantage of, on top of the primary generic keywords. For food related terms, there are always nutritional searches. "Calories in chocolate", "fat in chocolate" are two examples following the same theme. Governments, particularly in the UK and the US, are placing a larger emphasis on health awareness and encourage brands to educate their consumers. It is good PR for brands associated with obesity to actively promote healthy eating and a balanced diet. Being upfront and offering honest advice can lead to good publicity and help capture more search traffic, though of course, people will be critical of the dealer preaching to the addicts approach.

    Piggybacking

    Finally, piggybacking on current affairs is a great way to increase search traffic assuming that it can be made relevant. This could be the form of linkbait or just simply an article/blog post discussing the topic. I'd advise that it is kept on topic and that caution is taken with the topics that you chose to jump on. Choosing a topic that is close to people's hearts can lead to negative attention and unless you're Ryanair who seem to thrive from trolling the public, bad publicity is not good publicity. One very recent example is a Dragon's Den funded popcorn brand that jumped on the riot bandwagon:

    The key here is to discuss events relevant to your site and brand, perhaps showing some thought leadership while avoiding potentially emotive topics.

    After all this, I still believe there are companies that will not see a significant return from search. My experience has told me however, that there are always ways to increase traffic, even if you are concentrating solely on integration with campaign based marketing and brand terms. The extra traction from SEO and search as a whole is 100% worthwhile, if you can get the integration part right.

    How To Get Traffic | Surprise Winners Eligible For Showdown Bonus

    Jimmie Johnson can't win it. Neither can Carl Edwards or Jeff Gordon or Kevin Harvick .

    No one from the power teams of Hendrick Motorsports or Roush Fenway Racing has a shot at it, either.

    Some of the usual suspects are not in the running for the $3 million bonus Sunday night at Atlanta.

    If you had picked four names to win over the past five races in the Sprint Summer Showdown, most fans would have swung and missed on three of them -- Paul Menard , Marcos Ambrose and Brad Keselowski .

    And anyone who would have picked Keselowski to win twice in that span is either a close relative or one crazy gambler.

    Kyle Busch is the only one of the eligible four guys who isn't a surprise. Busch also is the only one of the four who has won at Atlanta, earning a victory in the spring race of 2008.

    He's probably the favorite of the four to take the money, which will be split three ways if one of the eligible drivers wins Sunday -- $1 million to the driver, $1 million to his chosen charity and $1 million to a fan paired with that driver.

    After his win at Bristol on Saturday night, Keselowski joked about being the only two-race winner in the qualified foursome.

    "Does that mean I only have to finish second?" he asked. "I should get something for winning two of the [qualifying] races, like a handicap.

    "We've got to do some better negotiating. Get Roger [Penske, his team owner] in here. Roger could get it to two [million for the driver]. I'm serious, he could. But that's great. We're going to have fun with it either way."

    No deal, but he's not a bad bet at this point. Keselowski is on a roll with two victories and four consecutive top-3 finishes.

    "It was always nice to run for some special things," Keselowski said. "Obviously, we would like to win a million dollars for charity. That would be pretty cool. And a million dollars for the fan -- that's even a better question: Is it $2 million now?"

    No, but two fans winning $500,000 each isn't bad.

    Keselowski won earlier this year at Kansas, which is a 1.5-mile oval like Atlanta, but not as similar as some people think. Atlanta is a high-banked oval with much higher speeds than Kansas.

    Keselowski's best finish at Atlanta was 25th, but that's misleading. He was headed for a sixth-place finish in the spring race last year before Edwards intentionally wrecked him, causing Keselowski's car to go airborne into the fence.

    Menard and Ambrose never have won on a so-called cookie-cutter track, but Menard finished fifth at Atlanta in the spring race last year. Ambrose's best Atlanta finish was 10th one year ago in five previous Cup starts on the track.

    Menard and Ambrose have an additional reason to win: A victory probably would earn them a Chase spot.

    Busch is on top of the standings and has nothing to lose. Keselowski is the only one of the four who might consider points racing if he has a chance to pass Tony Stewart for 10th in the standings. If Keselowski can move up one spot to 10th, he would start the Chase only three points behind Busch.

    However, if he wins this race and moves up to 10th, he could start the Chase tied with Busch.

    More than likely, all four of these teams will go for it and take some changes on pit strategy and fuel mileage to get the victory.

    Extra incentive to win always is a good thing.

    Everyone involved with Kentucky Speedway is trying to make amends. Major steps are under way to alleviate the traffic horrors thousands of fans experienced at the inaugural Cup event in July.

    Here is a list of changes for 2012 that were announced Tuesday:

    Some 143 acres of additional parking.

    Expanded exits off or Interstate 71 for easier access to the facility.

    Widening of state Route 35 where it leads into the speedway.

    Construction of a tunnel under Route 35 for pedestrian and shuttle traffic into the track.

    Hiring a professional parking management service to direct traffic during the race weekend.

    Speedway Motorsports Inc. is investing $7.5 million in these changes and the state of Kentucky is spending $3.6 million on road-infrastructure improvements.

    It's a shame it took a complete meltdown two months ago for these changes to come about, but officials are doing the right thing now.

    These improvements will make a big difference and lead to a much more enjoyable experience for everyone who opts to give Kentucky Speedway a second chance.

    If Keselowski is the hottest driver in NASCAR right now, Paul Wolfe is definitely on fire as his crew chief.

    In his first year as the team leader for the No. 2 Dodge, it's like Wolfe winning coach of the year honors as a rookie at age 34. And he may win back-to-back championships after leading Keselowski to the Nationwide Series title last year.

    Wolfe has helped Keselowski post two victories and four consecutive top-3 finishes, moving up 12 places in the standings in a month.

    "We kind of have things going for us right now," Wolfe said after the victory at Bristol on Saturday night. "It's weird because it's not really doing anything different. It's been a lot of small things over the last couple of months just starting to add up."

    So what's his secret? What makes Wolfe so good?

    He's been in the driver's seat. That's part of it. Wolfe drove part-time in the Nationwide Series from 2003 through 2005.

    It's many other things besides his driving experience, of course, but people are noticing what he's done this season. Wolfe humbly passes the credit elsewhere.

    "We've got fast race cars," he said. "The driver is doing his part. The pit crew is doing its part and we're making good calls and adjustments on pit road.

    "The biggest thing for me, being in the Cup series, is that these races are a lot longer than the Nationwide races. You have to be able to adjust on your car as the track changes, because as the race goes on, everyone gets better. I feel like as a team we've done a good job adjusting on our cars and making them have adjustability in them."

    The real question comes in how Wolfe will hold up when he goes against the master -- Chad Knaus -- once the Chase starts.

    Wolfe and Keselowski did one thing to perfection Saturday night at Bristol: They knew exactly when and where they could go over the pit road speed limit and get away with it.

    I commend them for it. They used the rules (or lack of rules) to their advantage. But do you really want drivers winning races by zooming past cars on pit road because they outsmarted the timing-lines police?

    NASCAR officials say they will add more timing lines at Bristol next year. In this age of technology, isn't there a better option than timing lines that only catch speeders at certain spots on the track?

    Google | Google One Of Many Victims In SSL Certificate Hack

    A Dutch company that issues digital certificates used to authenticate websites said late Tuesday that several dozen other websites in addition to Google have been affected by a security breach.

    The company, DigiNotar, issues SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) and EVSSL (Extended Validation) certificates, which are validated by Web browsers to ensure people are not visiting a fake website that is trying to appear legitimate.

    DigiNotar is what's called a Certificate Authority (CA), an entity that sells digital certificates to legitimate website owners. But DigiNotar issued a digital certificate for the google.com domain, a mistake that could allow a skilled attacker to intercept someone's e-mail.

    Google said Monday the fraudulent certificate was used and targeted users in Iran, although a security feature in its Chrome browser detected the certificate, tipping off users with a warning.

    DigiNotar, a subsidiary of a security company called Vasco Data Security International, issued a statement on Monday saying it discovered on July 19 during an audit that its infrastructure used to issue the certificates had been breached.

    In an interview late Tuesday afternoon, Jochem Binst, corporate communications director for Vasco, said that the attackers created fraudulent certificates for "several dozen" websites. Most were revoked after their discovery, he said.

    But the digital certificate for google.com -- which was issued July 10 -- only went live on Sunday, Binst said. In its statement, Vasco said that it was notified by the Dutch Computer Emergency Response Team that it had not been revoked yet. It was finally revoked on Monday, Binst said.

    It's not known how attackers breached DigiNotar's certificate-issuing infrastructure or how long they had access, but an audit is under way. "We are in the course of doing an extra audit and those findings will probably be known by the end of the week," Binst said.

    DigiNotar is halting sales of digital certificates as it investigates, Binst said. DigiNotar primarily sells its digital certificates to businesses in the Netherlands.

    Those businesses will have a hard time over the next few days. Google, Mozilla and Microsoft have revoked or are in the process of revoking DigiNotar's authority to vouch for its certificates. That means that people who go to websites using those certificates will likely see a warning saying the website is untrusted and should not be accessed.

    Binst said DigiNotar is contacting its customers. One option to fix the problem is to have those websites switch over certificates issued by the Dutch government, although he could not say which agency would issue those replacement certificates. Another option, Binst said, is to approach the browser makers to make technical changes to honor its certificates.

    Binst could not say how many customers DigiNotar has for its digital certificates , but Vasco said in its statement that the subsidiary's revenue from issuing digital certificates was less than 100,000 (US$144,000) for the first six months of this year.

    As with traditional SEO, elements such as titles, descriptions and tags all play a role, as do the quality and volume of incoming links. YouTube also measures and evaluates user signals (such as click-through rates, bounce rates, feedback etc.) among its important ranking factors.

    Here are my thoughts on some of the key YouTube optimisation issues when it comes to your titles, descriptions, tags and links.

    Titles

    It goes without saying that you should try to include the important keywords related to your subject in the title of your video (try to arrange for the most important ones to appear first if possible).

    Ideally you should also include your main keywords in the filename corresponding to the title, but remember that titles are generally cut off at around 60 characters in YouTube searches.

    Descriptions

    When drafting your video’s description, you should try to include the main keywords more than once and also bring in additional, semantically related words (while avoiding keyword stuffing, obviously).

    While it’s true that only the first 55 to 70 characters of the description are actually displayed by YouTube, you should aim to write four to five sentences (there’s evidence to suggest that even the parts that aren’t visible to the user, are still evaluated).

    Remember that external links (for example, affiliate links) can also be integrated into the description.

    Tags

    You should try to assign up to 10 tags, reflecting the most relevant keywords.

    Links

    External links are an important factor in YouTube video optimisation. And similar rules apply here as with traditional link building.

    The construction of a good link profile with thematically relevant links is crucial, with most experts agreeing that links from social media are also assessed.

    User Signals

    In general, YouTube wants to make videos that are relevant and engaging more visible, and it evaluates signals from visitors/users to work out which these are.

    So, for example, YouTube tracks how long users have stayed watching a video and at which point they left, which is why it has been able to make click-through rates (CTR) and bounce rates an important factor for determining video rankings.

    If you’re sneaky and try to use misleading or irrelevant keywords and/or titles to attract visitors, then high bounce rates will tell YouTube to make your content less visible.

    Here’s a list of some of the other important user signals that YouTube takes account of:

    The number of times the video has been viewed (within a set time frame). The more often it’s viewed, the more prominently it will be displayed. And in an ideal scenario it will land in the YouTube’s top lists.

    User feedback in the form of comments.

    The number of times the video appears in user playlists.

    The number of positive ratings the video has received.

    The number of blogs that have posted the video (which obviously also increases video impressions).

    In a similar way to the Google AdWords Keyword Tool, the YouTube Keyword Tool provides the opportunity to examine search volumes for individual keywords.

    Using this, you can quickly understand which keywords are suitable for optimising your video.

    Keywords that have a high search volume within YouTube are also often displayed right at the top of the Universal Search integrations within the normal Google search engine rankings pages (SERPs) and therefore have a higher CTR.

    A good preview image (thumbnail) increases click-through rates enormously, so it’s important to try to make YouTube select an eye catching and distinctive image from your video.

    YouTube will tend to take the thumbnail image from one of three positions within your video. So after you have uploaded the video, you can use ‘Edit’ to select between one and three thumbnails to be made available by YouTube.

    A rule of thumb for calculating where in your video YouTube will look to capture your thumbnail is:

    X = Length of video in seconds.

    Y = X divided by 4.

    Thumbnail 1 = Y.

    Thumbnail 2 = Y x 2.

    Thumbnail 3 = Y x 3.

    In other words you need to edit your video so that you have the optimal thumbnail in the right position.
