Backlinks | Can I Make An Infographic?

So, just to get this out of the way: that's a rhetorical question. You don't really have to answer it. More to the point, the answer is yes! You can do an infographic and you can do one right now. It's easier than you think. And unlike most uses (or misuses) or the word "rhetorical," instead of just meaning "a question that you don't need to answer," we're using it here to mean: "Sit down, we're going to learn something!"

First off you're probably thinking: "I have no design skills. How the heck am I going to make an awesome looking infographic that people will want to click on and share." Well, that's an oddly specific thought to be thinking, but it just so happens that we have a suggestion for dealing with that. Go with an infographic design firm. An experienced infographic (IG) design firm will hook you up with a seasoned design professional who can bring your idea for an IG to life and give you the SEO-boosting power that you want and need.

You could also be thinking, "Hey, I've got some design skills, maybe I'll just make my own IG." To which we say, you're certainly welcome to. However, like most things in life, it's easier said than done. Even if you know your way around Illustrator and Photoshop, you still might be better served by going through an IG design firm. Their designers have been doing IGs on a regular basis for months or years, and know what works and what doesn't. On top of that, getting an outside company to do it leaves you free to do...whatever it is that you do at your company!

Things are tough out there. Money in your pocket is tight, credit from outside sources is tight. Businesses of all kinds are finding ways to get more done with less money and resources. In this kind of economic climate, it may seem strange to think about spending money on something outside the scope of your usual operations. If you are a website that sells shoes, you may find yourself wondering how an infographic can help you.

Well, first off, it's important to think of your infographic as an investment, not simply "money spent." A good looking infographic, with the proper promotions, will bring in links, bring in traffic, and build up your SEO rankings. On top of that, all those people that come in as an organic result of your IG will have a chance to convert once you get them into a revenue funnel.

When shopping around for an IG firm, check prices vs. experience and proven results. Any IG firm worth its salt will have a well-selected portfolio and a few choice testimonials from past clients. Beware of companies that lay out their entire back catalogue of past work or who skirt around the issue of price. Get quotes, compare notes, then pick a company and run with it.

Pro Tip: Find a price that you can live with. Don't try to haggle, cut corners, or get special deals. The IG firm you are dealing with has set their price point to cover their costs, pay their designers, and power their business. Finding multiple prices and comparing different companies will prevent you from having buyer's remorse later.

This is the missing "link" (see what we did there?) in so many infographic link-building campaigns. Frankly, without promotion, you can't even call it a "campaign." It's just an infographic, just sitting there on your site " doing nothing.

Now, this is the one aspect of the IG program where you have a little bit of control. If you have a great network (25+ solid connections) of other blogs, writers, and friendly sites, where you are sure that you can get your IG posted with your proper backlink, then maybe (maybe) you can do the promotions yourself.

However, any halfway decent IG firm will have a dedicated team member whose whole job is just to promote your infographic. He or she sits at a computer for as long as it takes, emailing blog after blog after site after blog looking for places to get your IG posted with your link. It may take a while, but like old fashioned police work, doing this kind of stuff slowly and thoroughly is the only correct way, and the only way to get you the backlinks and exposure that you want. On top of that, the promotions team member often has many years of experience doing this kind of thing. Their connections often help them get your IG posted on some of the better blogs in your niche (whatever that niche is).

Infographics are cool. People like them. Not everybody has them. They are something new and different in an Internet that is rapidly filling up with the same old boring content. Everyone wants inbound links and traffic, but too many people are trying the same old tricks to get them. If you are thinking about breaking into the world of infographics , either on your own or with the help of an infographics firm, now could be the time. Don't worry too much about the barriers to entry. With a little research and some savvy shopping, you too can be changing the course of your business with a snappy infographic.
