Federal Money For Irene Available To Monroe County Residents

The federal government is making money available for Monroe County residents to help cover their losses after Hurricane Irene.

President Barack Obama issued a major disaster declaration for the state on Sept. 3, triggering the release of federal money to help individuals and communities recover from the storm during the period of Aug. 26-30.

The disaster declaration was amended Tuesday to include Monroe County.

This allows individuals and households to apply for help by phone or online.

The Monroe County Office of Emergency Management will hold a news conference today to discuss details.

When Irene swept through the Poconos, trees were knocked down and roads flooded. Many trees fell on power lines that knocked out electricity to a record number of homes. At the peak of the storm, more than 53,000 Pocono residents were without power.

Monroe County Emergency Management Agency Director Guy Miller has estimated the damage in Monroe County at more than $600,000. That includes $153,000 for private property damage, $283,250 for municipal property damage and $167,276 for public expenses related to municipal employee overtime and equipment used in cleanup.

Pocono Township recorded the most private property damage. East Stroudsburg, Barrett and Hamilton townships required the most public assistance and had the highest municipal property damage costs.

Pike County was not among the counties on the disaster list, even though Pike County's Lehman Township alone reported an estimated $215,000 in damages.
