SEO | Your URL File Extension Wont Affect Your SEO

There are plenty of ways to improve your website's Search Engine Optimisation , or SEO , and the purpose of this series of articles is to illuminate the many ways that this is possible. The purpose of Search Engine Optimisation is to improve your visibility to search engines so that when the users that you want to target punch in keyword or key phrase searches relevant to your site, you appear within the search results.

But that's not all. You also want to perform the best SEO practices possible, because search engines order their results based upon a range of criteria, so that they can present users with the best, most reliable and most relevant search results first. It is generally accepted that in the vast majority of cases users will find what they were searching for within the first three search results on the first page of listings. The aim of the game is getting the search engines to favour you so that you can appear on the first page of results and preferably at the top of it.

Throughout you website there are all sorts of SEO opportunities to take advantage of and improve your search result placement. Including plenty of text content on your website is crucial because search engine crawlers read text to ascertain relevance to the keyword search. For this reason the text that you're including on your page should be rich in keywords and relevance, but also needs to be natural understandable language as search engines will penalise an over-use of keywords at the expense of good sense.

This is just one of the methods that you might use to improve your search engine performance and placement within the results list, and there are countless others that are worthy of your time and effort.

Your URL file extension, however, isn't one of them. Put simply: it doesn't matter.

Your URL file extension will not affect your SEO performance, so whether you use .html, .htm, .asp, .php or any other, you can rest assured that this information will have no negative or positive effect upon your position in the rankings.

Focus your energies on other parts of your web pages, and reap the benefits of good SEO.
